It was discovered by random drilling by Columbus M. ("Dad") Joiner, October 3, 1930, on completion of the No. 3 Daisy Bradford. The producing formation is the Upper Cretaceous Woodbine Sandstone. The Woodbine Group is a geological formation in east Texas whose strata date back to the Early to Middle Cenomanian age of the Late Cretaceous. It is the producing formation of the giant East Texas Oil Field (also known as the "Black Giant") from which over 5.42 billion barrels of oil have been produced. The East Texas basin is divided into eight oil and gas plays which share similar geological characteristics of petroleum source beds, reservoir rocks, and hydrocarbon trapping mechanisms. This report describes the geology of an area 12 miles square in Eastland County, Tex. (See fig. 7.) In the north­ eastern half of this area is the Ranger oil field, one of the most pro­ ductive oil fields discovered in the United States during the last five years.

This giant East Texas oil field extended into parts of Smith, Upshur, Gregg, Cherokee and Rusk counties, ultimately with 30,340 historic and active oil wells. It became the largest oil field in the U.S. outside of Alaska.
