The butt area of a stock is most subject to cracks in the toe caused by impact, but because of the large surface of open grain is responsible for considerable moisture transfer. Remove the butt plate and apply a few liberal coats of linseed or Tung oil to the butt and as far down the bolt hole as you can get. Following are a few pics of the stock/crack before repair. It appeared on top of the stock wrist only, about 3-3/4" in length. And although there is a shadow for the stock inletting picture, the crack protruded downward approximately 1" at the rearmost inletting. Did that come from J&G Sales? To protect areas outside the crack line, you can use masking tape on either side of the crack and slowly bridge the gap. You don't want a big high build up, your just weaping in the crack. So don't try running a big long bead of glue, continue the small spotting like you started until the crack is coated. Don't try to make the glue your final topcoat. Done properly you can fill any low void with a light coat or two of the finish oil you like. Try working some un-thickened epoxy into the crack. Put blue tape right up to the edge of the crack and squeegee as much epoxy as you can get in there. Pre-warming the stock with a hair dryer which will help the epoxy to wick in. Don't pre-heat the epoxy, that just degrades it. Wipe away the excess- keep after it for a while because it'll likely weep out for a bit. Pull the tape well before the epoxy sets up so as to not get little bits of it stuck to the wood. After removing the clamps or tape, clip the ends of the stock repair pins off close to the stock. Use a file to bring them down flush with the stock surface. Also use a file to remove any excess glue. When you get close to the stock surface, switch to sandpaper in a sanding block for the final finish. This was a common way to repair a common problem with Parkers and other fine doubles - a split stock head. It is an effective way to repair the damage, but a horrendous one in terms of aesthetics and value. It is also totally un-necessary. Wipe off as mush access glue as you can after the crack is closed and before it cures. The beauty of Gorilla glue is that it expands as it cures, forcing the glue into the joint and pores of the wood. Once dry, I just scrape flush with a razor blade and touch up with a little gun stock oil. After many shots, I see no sign of the cracks opening up. First figure out the reason the stock cracked. It looks to me that the inside circular part had all the pressure on it. Probably very tight. Flex the crack open as far as possible, and force epoxy in the crack, then clamp it tight together. Wipe off the excess with acetone. Then glass bed the receiver to the stock. Stock repair.
